Mining

South Africa remains one of the largest producers of mineral resources in the world and the mining industry is intrinsically linked to the national economy. It has now become critically important to ensure mines are developed and operated in a sustainable manner – environmentally, socially, and financially.

We have undertaken mining projects for junior miners and mining giants alike, both in South Africa and throughout Africa. We have worked with multiple commodities – from coal, manganese and iron ore to tin, platinum, gold, and bauxite. Our key personnel are well versed in the most current mining technologies as well as the sensitivities around mining developments. We always strive to optimise time and costs to improve the viability of any project.

Mining Services include but are not limited to:

    • TAILINGS STORAGE FACILITIES (TSF) – TSF and associated infrastructure design to SABS 0286 (Code of Practice – Mine Residue) and Global Industry Standards on Tailings Management.
    • MINE DESIGN – Opencast and Underground designs; Life of Mine plans; Mine schedules.
    • GEOTECHNICAL INVESTIGATION – Foundation design; Soils investigation; Retaining structures; Soil stability.
    • GEOMETRIC DESIGN – Access roads; Haul roads; Platforms.
    • PAVEMENT DESIGN – Access roads; Haul roads.
    • BULK WATER SERVICES – Bulk pipelines; Pump stations; Reservoirs; Dams; River diversions.
    • WATER & WASTEWATER – Reticulation; Purification facilities; Water balance; Stormwater management plans.
    • BULK FUEL – Storage; Piping.
    • BULK MATERIAL HANDLING – Conveyors; Bulk slurry pipelines; Crushers; Screens, etc.
    • STRUCTURAL ENGINEERING – ROM tips; Process plant structures; Workshops; Service bays; Headgear structures.
    • CAPEX & OPEX – Financial Models; Cost Estimates.
    • OWNERS TEAM REPRESENTATION – Engineering Lead.

Featured Mining Projects

Below are some of Nurizon’s featured projects.

Bel Air Bauxite Mine

Project: Bankable Feasibility Study (BFS) 20211

Nurizon Consulting Engineers was appointed by Alufer Mining Ltd. to undertake a Bankable Feasibility Study (BFS) for the Bel Air Bauxite Mine development in Guinea, West Africa. This followed the 2012 Feasibility Study (FS) phase submission done by Nurizon. Alufer is an independent mining company focused on the development of bauxite resources in Guinea. The project is divided into two distinct geographical areas,

  1. Mining operation areas and transport corridor, which links the mining areas with the export facility.
  2. Export Facility, encompassing bulk materials handling, port loading and trans-shipping.

Scope of works on the project included:

  • Mining – Conventional drill and blast and truck and shovel operations;
  • Haulage – Material is transported from the mine pit to the Mine Support Area at the coast;
  • Stacking and reclaiming – A 150,000t bulk storage facility;
  • Loading – 2.3km causeway/trestle with longitudinal shiploader for charging transhipment barges;
  • Transhipment – 15,000t, self-propelled and self off loading barges transport and load Panamax/Capesize vessels at the transhipment zone;
  • Mine Support Area;
  • Power and water utilities;
  • The area houses all administrative complexes, fuel storage, power generation, stores and maintenance.

Elandspruit Coal Mine

Project: Mine Development: Feasibility Study and Owner’s Team Representation

Nurizon was contracted by the client to complete a feasibility study, addressing all civil, mining and electrical infrastructure designs, as well as compiling a financial model for a new greenfields coal mine in Mpumalanga, South Africa.

Project: Mine Development: Feasibility Study and Owner’s Team Representation

A site to the east of Delmas, part of the Central Witbank Coal Field, was identified by the client for the development of a new open-cast coal mine. It was estimated that the reserve would yield approximately 3 million tonnes of coal annually, with an estimated lifespan of 20 years.

Rietkuil Coal Mine, Mpumalanga

Project: Front-end Infrastructure Development: Detail Design
